Engage Pupils, Motivate Reading Practice, Improve Reading Progress
Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Pupils read books, take online quizzes, and get immediate feedback. Pupils respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills. As a result of receiving regular feedback from Accelerated Reader, teachers and librarians are given many opportunities to praise pupils for their successes and to discuss with them what they have been reading. Pupils using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.
Your child will complete a STAR READER assessment to indicate their current reading level. This assessment is carried out at several stages throughout the year. Your child then picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer, in school. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read). Pupils will be given the opportunity to have 30 minutes of independent Accelerated Reading time each day (15 mins after break time and lunch time).
To encourage pupils and in order to reward their efforts we will have a range of challenges running throughout the school year.
