Engage Pupils, Motivate Reading Practice, Improve Reading Progress

Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Pupils read books, take online quizzes, and get immediate feedback. Pupils respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills. As a result of receiving regular feedback from Accelerated Reader, teachers and librarians are given many opportunities to praise pupils for their successes and to discuss with them what they have been reading. Pupils using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

Your child will complete a STAR READER assessment to indicate their current reading level. This assessment is carried out at several stages throughout the year. Your child then picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace.  When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer, in school.  (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read). Pupils will be given the opportunity to have independent Accelerated Reading time each day.

To encourage pupils and in order to reward their efforts there are two awards available.

Star Reader is awarded at the end of each month to a pupil in each class (P5-P7). Pupils may receive this certificate because they have read a lot of books and received good results in the quizzes, or because of their improvement over the month. 

AR Millionaire is awarded to pupils who have read over a million words over the course of the year.

Accelerated Reader Rewards

As well as the monthly Star reader and Millionaire certificates pupils also gain points for every book they pass a quiz on. These points can be saved up and exchanged for a variety of prizes, such as; Bookmarks, notebooks, mini games, footballs, craft box, earphones, colouring books etc. Our top prize is a £10 voucher for a shop of the pupils choice!

Points can be saved from P5 through to P7. Any points from your previous year will be carried over to use, so you can save for the prize you want!

In class pupils all have an Incentive card. If they get over 85% on a quiz they will get a stamp or signature on their card. Once their card is completely full they can exchange it for a Golden Ticket. There will also be a monthly prize draw in class for a Golden Ticket, pupils can get their name entered for the monthly draw if they get 70% or above in a quiz.

Golden Tickets can be used for:

• A night off written homework.
• Being able to sit beside a friend for the day.
• A cushion to sit on in class for the day.
